Problems can happen whether you have an older HVAC system. You can control an analog dial or a smart thermostat from your couch with your phone. For example, it could set your thermostat to cool on a hot summer day. If that happens, turn on the heater instead, or it could do the opposite. Here are some things that could go wrong with your thermostat (and what you can do about it).

How to Fix a Broken Thermostat

Here are some things you can do if your thermostat is acting up.

1. The batteries need to be fixed.

If the batteries in your thermostat are old, low on power, or eroding, they can make it act up. Low batteries are the most common (and easiest to fix) problem, so start there.

Heat Pump Coils Freezing Up In the Summer

Here are some things you can do if your thermostat is acting up.

1. The batteries need to be fixed.

If the batteries in your thermostat are old, low on power, or eroding, they can make it act up. Low batteries are the most common (and easiest to fix) problem, so start there.

Solution:

Change the batteries first to figure out if that fixes the problem if your thermostat is acting. Don’t touch the battery with your bare skin if you see corrosion. Ensure water isn’t getting into the thermostat.

2. The thermostat needs to be in the right place.

The best place for your thermostat to measure temperature is five feet above the floor in an open space. You are putting your thermostat in a corner, near a vent or window, or in a closet. It will read the temperature of that area’s unique microclimate instead of how the rest of your home feels.

Solution:

You’ll have to move your thermostat somewhere open where it can get an accurate reading. This requires rerouting the wires, so hire an electrician near you.

HVAC System Has a Strange Odor

Do you notice a strange odor coming from your HVAC system? It could be your heat pump. If a heat pump has a problem, it may emit odors. Contact a professional when you notice a strange smell in your unit. Depending on the scent, you may have a problem.

Some heat pumps emit a musty odor in the summer. That smell is usually caused by mold. Running your unit causes condensation, and without proper drainage, mold can grow. Though mold may not affect how well your unit runs, it could affect the air quality in your home, leading to health issues.

3. Your thermostat is displaying the wrong temperature.

Your thermostat may be reading the wrong temperature. For example, it’s a hot day and 78 degrees outside, but your thermostat jumps to 74 degrees. The air conditioner or heat won’t turn on. It is because the thermostat shows an inaccurate temperature in the room.

Solution:

Get a working thermometer and put it near your thermostat. If the numbers don’t match, your thermostat gives you a false room temperature reading. This is a common issue with older thermostats that use mercury bulbs. Consider replacing your old thermostat with a newer digital one.

4. It’s an old thermostat.

Even though we wish they could, mechanical appliances don’t last forever. If your thermostat is older, it may be broken because it is old.

Solution:

A digital thermostat might be a good thing to get now. The cost to install a thermostat varies based on the model you choose, and there are many to choose from. Smart thermostats connect to your WiFi, so you can set them to turn down the heat at work and turn it up when you’re at home on the weekends reading a book. Some of them let you set a schedule and learn how you use energy so you can save money.

If these issues mentioned above occur on your WiFi Thermostats. It is better to resolve it immediately or call a professional help like COYOTE HVAC.
